If you would have asked me at 16 years-old what I would be doing with my life at 34, there would have been thousands of answers I would have given besides planting a church. But, at this point in my life, if you said, John, what is the one thing you would want to do with your life if you had the guts and faith to do it? My answer would be: to plant a church.
Well, here we are.
For six years I told God if He gave me enough faith I would plant a church. Essentially, I was saying to God, When I feel like I'm ready I'll plant a church. It's similar to what many aspiring parents say, We will have kids when we are ready.
Well, what I've realized with church planting, just like having kids, is I'll never be ready; there will never be the perfect cirumcstances to plant a church, as there will never be the perfect circumstances to have a child.
What I have found is with God, faith requires action. It takes you stepping out on what God is saying to you. Yes, I believe there is good, even perfect timing. But, often we delay God working in our lives until we feel that we are ready - when in reality you'll never be ready - you just have to step out in faith and believe God at His word.
So, that's what we are doing.
Without a doubt, there is nothing else I would rather be doing. Not many people get the opportunity to fulfill their dreams, but I do. I feel blessed, humbled, scared, in over my head, yet expectant like a kid on Christmas Eve of what God will do through Lifehouse Newport News.
Lifehouse Newport News will officially launch Sunday, September 17, 2017. In the mean time, there is a lot of work to be done. Currently, my family and I have the privilege of serving at Lifehouse Virginia Beach as Assistant Pastors while we work and build Lifehouse Newport News.
Lifehouse Virginia Beach is two-years-old and is already a healthy, self sustaining, growing church, led by Pastor Brandon Shank. Kristen and I consider ourselves blessed - almost so blessed that we could call ourselves lucky (but, of course, as Christians we don’t use that term 😃). We are honored to be a part of Lifehouse Virginia Beach and learn the ins and outs of church planting from a great leader and church.
Over the next few months, through this blog, I will keep you updated on how building Lifehouse Newport News is going. In the mean time, the Ware family asks you to:
Pray for The Ware's. Specifically pray for guidance, direction, resources, timing, and wisdom.
Put Lifehouse Newport News on the prayer team’s list at your church.
Prayerfully consider if God would have you be a part of bringing life change through Christ to Newport News and the surrounding Peninsula - whether by joining the launch team or partnering with us financially. I would love to talk with you more about this over coffee (my treat!). Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org to set up time and place. Or, if you're out of the area, we can set up a meeting over Skype.
It’s going to be a life-altering, fun, insane adventure, and we look forward to sharing it with you.
