I’ve heard it said the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. Typically, this statement is given in business books as a reminder for businesses to keep their main purpose in front of them. But, when I think about this statement, it is vitally important for the Church as well. Unfortunately, when many people hear the word church, many adjectives come into their mind: judgmental… selfish… bigots… out dated… unloving… and the list could go on and on.
In many ways I don’t think it’s fair the Church gets painted with a wide brush because of people who do un-Christ-like things in the name of Christ. I believe many churches aren’t focused on the main thing, and the main thing is sharing the Gospel and seeing it change lives.
Jesus said while He was speaking publicly and recorded in John 10:10, I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of. (MSG) Here, Jesus states the reason for Him coming was to give people life… a better one than they ever dreamed of.
And that is the main thing of Lifehouse Newport News. We will be a church that helps people experience life change through Christ, and equip them to live a life better than they ever dreamed of.
Fortunately for some and unfortunately for others, this life change through Christ and Him helping us live a better life than we ever dreamed of is a process, because when Jesus came on the scene, he completely redefined what a good life was; and it ticked some people off and gave others hope.
Lifehouse believes life change through Christ happens when people commit to and live out five G’s. Over the next few blogs, we will explore these five G’s in greater detail and see how authentic, lasting life change happens.
